For the Love of the Game

The Game

Oakland University Baseball is in its 59th season. Although they started off as a Division II team, they transitioned to Division I in 1997.

Now, the team is guided by head coach Brian Nelson. Nelson is in his first season as head coach. He brings vision to the program – a conference title, NCAA playoff run, and a new stadium all fall into his future plans.

To kick off the season 2026 season, the Golden Grizzlies embark on a 12 day journey through the Promise Land of college baseball: the Southeastern Conference. It just means more.

The Golden Grizzlies start off in Athens, Ga. for a four game series against Georgia. Next, they head to Knoxville for a a midweek matchup against the Tennessee Volunteers. They end their trip with a three game series against Texas A+M in College Station, Texas.

Each pitch, catch, and swing are a step towards the conference play that awaits them when they get home.

The Focus

Breathe. Focus. Bat to ball; strong swings.

Baseball requires immense focus from each player on the field; timing is everything.

The stage is bigger, and the opponent is stronger. The Golden Grizzlies must show up with the utmost level of focus.

They arrive on site and begin to stretch. They run batting practice and infield/outfield drills. The clock ticks closer to first pitch.

The game begins and the focus does not waiver. At each plate appearance, the hitter analyzes each pitch – watching the rotation in order to predict the ball’s movement.

Pitchers take a deep breath on the mound. They send the ball from their hand to the catcher’s glove in hopes of the umpire calling a strike.

Focus: it’s the key contributor to every success on the field.

The Passion

Players come to Oakland University from around the country to play baseball. They’re united by one thing: love of the game.

The SEC elevates that love. It reignites childhood dreams of playing in a sold-out stadium. This is where lifelong fantasies become real life.

Each strikeout is a reason to cheer. Each run scored is a reason to celebrate. Players show their school pride and team spirit every time they get on base.

And when the ball gets sent over the wall, the bear mask is unveiled.

This team is more than the 37 individuals on the roster. They are one heart, and one unit. They lift one another up during the “highs” and carry each other’s burdens in the “lows.”

The love of the game is not about winning or losing. It is about going to war with the opponent for nine innings. It is about the dirt on a jersey, the high fives in the dugout and the passion that emerges long before first pitch.
